A heads-up for you regarding rebates for new appliances... NOTE: the California state program is only available for a month!  You have to buy the appliance between April 22nd and May 23rd.  It's a big push as part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act effort, so they want to get as many as possible before summer. 

But, you can combine the rebate with a utility rebate also... so for a clothes washer, the state program will pay $100 and you can also get $50 from PG&E.  Make sure to check both web sites for the requirements, though, as the eligibility requirements for each program are slightly different.
